What is a Sorority...a fraternity?
Throughout life, from early childhood on, it is natural and normal for people to band together. Common interests, similiar backgrounds, personal habits, social tastes and levels of intelligence cause men and women to form circles of friendship in school and society. It was this basic need for companionship that created fraternities and sororities. Delta Zeta Sorority is a self-sustaining friendship organization composed of female students in colleges and universities all over America and Canada. The selected members, are held together closely by bonds of congeniality, loyalty and high ideals. Since membership in Delta Zeta is a priviledge, all members are expected to exemplify high scholarship, promote cultural interests, participate in campus activities, experience group interaction, provide service to others, cultivate friendships and continually strive to improve themselves. Many of these basic principles of sororities and fraternities are essentially the same, yet each is distinct. Each group fulfills its own purpose and serves the needs of its individual members by developing effective programs in scholarship, campus and community service and self-improvement. All sorority and fraternity functions at a college or university support the aims and purposes of that institution and are guided by the policies and rule of their national organization. The fraternity system expresses the American tradition of freedom. Through periods of international wars, changing educational philosophies and economic unrest, the system has continued to grow and expand. Since the first fraternity was founded in 1776 to the first sorority in 1870, they have grown to almost a hundred national fraternities and sororities. They have survived adverse criticism and student indifference and continue to grow because the need for them lies with the college student. Students need contact with their associates and the sorority (fraternity) is a laboratory of college life. Here members actually experience group living in daily give and take. Here they learn their own possibilities and those of their associates and how to develop these potentials. In nothing else are the interests and needs of the college student so completely met as in fraternal association.
Being a Responsible Greek
The general public image of Greeks lumps all fraternities and sororities into on basket. For better of for worse, both women's and men's groups usually are painted with the same brush in the minds of the larger community and are not distinguised as seperate or individual organizations. The phenomenon means that our actions (good and bad) directly affect the reputation that all Greeks will have in their communities. If one or a few groups are disorderly, loud and destructive, the public believes that all Greek organizations are unpleasant. Conversely, if all Greek organizations would subscribe to their founding principles and values, act as good citizens and do worthwhile deeds in the community, the public might view Greek organizations as contributing members of society. Greek need all of the praise and good will they can earn. That means that each New Member and initiate has a responsibility to promote a positive Greek image - somethng Delta Zetas do daily in the way the appear on campus, their leadership among students and in the way they conduct themselves in public.

Greek Life Inspirations
"Letters Today, Leaders Tomorrow" "From the outside looking in you can never understand it. From the inside looking out you can never explain it." "No matter the letter, we are all Greek together." "What ever the letter, Greeks do it better!" "Not for four years, but for life." "Fraternities and Sororities symbolize all we wish to accomplish in our own lives. They represent all the struggles we face as we grow. Why we cling to them no one can explain, but in the end, we are all stronger for it." "Greek Life is the fuel that allows common people to produce uncommon results." "People ask why I am in a sorority and I try to explain all the things a sorority is that they cannot see. A sorority is more than letters on a sweartshirt, I say. More than traditional songs, a gold badge, rituals, an obligation, or a way of life. A sorority is learning about people, a sorority is giving without expectation a return. A sorority is earning respect from others, as well as for yourself. A sorority will not solve all your problems. But I have made good friends and found confidence there to help take me take life one step at a time." "It's not just letters, parties and good times. It is a feeling that will never leave you as long as you live. It is a reponsibility and duty to yourself and your sisters. It is an eternal love." "Celebrate we will, for life is short but sweet for certain!" - DMB "Chance made us Sisters, Choice made us Friends." "Sisters are angels who lift us to our feet when our wings have trouble remembering how to fly." "You wouldn't haze your friends. Why would you haze your Sisters? The goal of pledgeship is to be a member of a house, to make you want to be a Sister. Where does hazing fit in? Quite simply it doesn't. Why abuse someone for 10 weeks in the name of becoming their best friends? A Sorority is not about building pledges. It's about building Sisters!" "Sisterhood is not letting petty differences get in the way of anything. It is about being true to yourself. It is about experiencing new adventures by entering the realm of others."
